Frequently asked questions about measuring instruments
Why should I have my measuring instruments calibrated?
Calibration of an instrument provides certainty: your instrument is traceable to the national standards. In fact, if your company holds a quality certification such as BRL100, RvA, STEK, SCIOS, or KOMO, you are required to have your instruments calibrated periodically.
Timely calibration can prevent a lot of unnecessary work. As a certified company, you must take appropriate measures for all products that may have been affected by inaccurate measurements. The sooner a deviation is detected, the better.
What is the difference between calibration, inspection, and verification?
The terms calibration, inspection, and verification are often a source of confusion.
Calibration is the determination of the deviation of a measuring instrument by comparing it with the applicable measurement standards. During calibration, it is also possible to check the instrument against the manufacturer’s technical specifications. In other words: does the instrument measure what it is supposed to measure, and can it perform its function correctly?
Inspection generally involves testing the basic functions of an instrument.
Verification applies when measurements are performed on legally regulated instruments that fall under the Dutch Metrology Act. In other words: does the instrument comply with the legal requirements of the Metrology Act?
